St Andrews, Castles and Golf Tour from Edinburgh Cruise Port – Itinerary
The St Andrews, Castles and Golf Tour from Edinburgh Cruise Ship Port begins with an impressive drive across the Forth estuary on the Queensferry Crossing, which is longest bridge of its type in the world. Our first visit is to Falkland (historic town and palace). Then we spend time in the ancient town of St Andrews. On our return we thread our way through the attractive fishing villages and harbours of the east coast, and end with a visit to Aberdour Castle.
The Forth Bridges
The Forth Bridges are an astounding sight. The Queensferry Crossing is the most recent of them. To the east stand both the Forth Road Bridge (looking like a baby brother of The Golden Gate Bridge) and the mammoth Forth Bridge. The Forth Bridge is a railway bridge opened in 1890 and considered, at that time, to be one of the seven engineering wonders of the world!
Falkland
Falkland has many buildings dating from the 1500’s and 1600’s and was Scotland’s first conservation village. It grew up around the monarchs’ hunting lodge of Falkland Palace. The palace, begun in 1500, is Scotland’s finest example of French-style Renaissance architecture. The Outlander show also used the town as the filming location for Inverness.
St Andrews
St Andrews has been a Burgh since 1100’s. Nowadays it’s famous for being “the home of golf”, having Scotland’s oldest University and because Wills met Kate here. You can explore the town, visit the golf museum or visit the ruins of the castle and cathedral. Chariots of Fire was filmed on the beach here because of the lovely seascapes. And while we’re here, let’s not forget a photograph of the famous bridge on the 18th fairway.
East Neuk of Fife
East Neuk of Fife is the name for the collection of old and picturesque fishing villages and harbours that we will travel through on our way to our next stop. This route has many opportunities for great photos and so is much enjoyed by our guests.
Aberdour Castle
Aberdour Castle, built in the 1100’s, is our last stop. The castle was home to the Douglas Earls of Morton, and a couple of highlights are the walled garden and the huge doocot (or pigeon-house). The original castle lords were the Mortimers, and as a result of being pillars of the faith they funded St Fillans, the church on the site. It is similar in age to the castle and was filmed as the Abbey Ste Anne de Beaupre for the Outlander series.
