Scottish Borders and Rosslyn Chapel Tour from Edinburgh Cruise Ports – Itinerary
The Scottish Borders and Rosslyn Chapel Tour from Edinburgh Cruise Port begins with a drive to Abbotsford. Here we visit the home of Sir Walter Scott. Then it is on to the ruins of Melrose Abbey. Then we take in the marvellous photostop at Scott’s View. If the weather is fine then we can take a walk to a huge statue of hero William Wallace, and then we finish with a visit to Rosslyn Chapel.
The Scottish Borders
The Scottish Borders encompass both beautiful scenery and a rich tapestry of places and stories. Known as the Debateable Lands theirs is a bloody history. Conflict flared during the wars between Scotland and England, and also in the raiding times of those known as Border Reivers.
Abbotsford
Abbotsford, the home of novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott, has many towers and intriguing interiors. The lovely gardens contain many historical curiosities which Scott collected over the years, and the visitor centre has (as well as a well-stocked gift shop) an exhibition on Sir Walter Scott’s remarkable life and his impact on Scotland.
Melrose Abbey
Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136, was the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland, but was sacked in 1385 by Richard II of England. Following a rebuild, the abbey is considered among the most magnificent medieval church architecture in Britain. It is also the last resting place for the heart of our hero-king – Robert the Bruce.
Scott’s View
Scott’s View is a lookout over the marvellous Eildon Hills (named Trimontium by the Romans) and the valley of the River Tweed. This was one of Sir Walter Scott’s favourite places to just contemplate and enjoy the view.
The William Wallace Statue
The William Wallace Statue (1814) located overlooking the River Tweed is a short, level walk through the woods. If time permits and the weather is fine then it is a lovely walk, and the statue is a great photo location.
Rosslyn Chapel
Rosslyn Chapel, founded in 1446, is one of the most remarkable buildings in Scotland. Pagan green men hide everywhere in the stone undergrowth and exquisite stone carvings cover every surface. Tales of Templars treasure, the Holy Grail and Freemasonry abound and modern-day fame came due to the book and film – The Da Vinci code.
