Loch Lomond and Inveraray Castle Tour from Greenock Cruise Port -Itinerary
The Loch Lomond and Inveraray Castle Tour for Greenock Cruise Ships first takes us up Loch Lomond to Tarbet, and then through the impressive mountain pass known as the “Rest and Be Thankful”. Inveraray is our first major stop of the day, and there are options of town or castle. Then it’s onwards to a photostop at the beautiful ruins of Kilchurn Castle. The final part of the day sees our return down Lomondside and a visit to the pretty village of Luss, on the shores of Loch Lomond.
Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond is Scotland’s largest lake (by surface area) and undoubtedly one of the prettiest. The song about the Bonnie Bonnie Banks is well known around the world. It tells the story of two Jacobite Prisoners awaiting execution. Mighty Ben Lomond, meaning Beacon Mountain, dominates the lake and as a result the lake shares its name.
Rest and Be Thankful
The British army carved the mountain road, the Rest and Be Thankful, through the Arrochar Alps in 1753. It was a difficult construction and so it was the soldiers who erected the stone at the summit – inscribed with the words that give this summit its name – “rest and be thankful”. Nowadays you will want your camera while you rest!
Inveraray Castle
Inveraray Castle, which dates from 1746, is the home of the chief of Clan Campbell, the 13th Duke of Argyll. It was in the TV series, Downton Abbey, as fictional Duneagle Castle, partly as a result of its sumptuous interiors. Other attractions include the formal gardens, woodland walks, shop and tearoom.
Inveraray
Inveraray town is a planned burgh, conceived and built by the 3rd Duke of Argyll from around 1750 onwards. So soon afterwards this settlement became Clan Campbell’s judicial and mercantile capital from that time. It was also the traditional county town of Argyll. It is nowadays well served with a variety of shops of interest to its many visitors.
Kilchurn Castle
Kilchurn Castle is a romantic ruin, set on Loch Awe. The Campbells of Glenorchy built it in the mid-1400’s and it later served as redcoat garrison during the 1745 Jacobite rising. It is an iconic photo location because of the waters of the loch in front and the impressive slopes of Ben Cruachan standing behind.
Luss
Luss is a beautiful village on Loch Lomond, laid out as a model community in the early 1800’s by the Colquhoun family. It was used from 1980 as fictional “Glendarroch” in the long running TV series “Take the High Road”. Luss churchyard has a very rare example of a Viking gravestone. It is a popular stop because we also give free time to wander or shop in the village.
