Loch Ness with Culloden and Urquhart Castle Tour – Itinerary
Loch Ness with Culloden and Urquhart Castle Tour is a full day. We begin by visiting Clava Cairns followed by Culloden Battlefield. We then travel through Inverness to the west and visit Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and Glen Affric.
Clava Cairns
Clava Cairns and Standing Stones are 4,000 years old and are a ritual landscape of fantastic design and spirituality. Outlander fans love Clava too, because it has a split stone, just like the book, where you could tumble backwards in time! These Bronze Age monuments align on both sun and moon, and could be viewed as a temple of astronomy.
Culloden Battlefield
Culloden Battlefield, site of the last battle on British soil, stands atop a ridge, four miles from Inverness. Here, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army met a final and chilling end. This story is well-told in the multi-media centre onsite. There is a shop and a restaurant as well as the exhibitions. We will also take you on a walk on the battlefield, to the Well of the Dead, the Main Cairn and the Clan Graves, where those fallen clansmen are buried.
Loch Ness
Loch Ness is the largest lake in the country; 23 miles long by 1.5 miles wide. This is more than enough water to hide its most famous inhabitant; Nessie! We’ll tell you her stories, even if you don’t glimpse her. One option you can discuss with your guide is taking a boat trip, and arriving at the castle by water.
Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle is one of the iconic castles of Scotland. Held first by Pictish tribal chiefs, later a Royal Stronghold, and finally a Clan Grant seat, it saw 1,000 years of continuous occupation. Even its destruction, in 1692, did not end the story as it became a favourite of painters and poets in the 18th and 19th centuries, and as a result today it is one of Scotland’s most visited castles.
Glen Affric
Glen Affric is one of the last remnants of the Great Caledonian Pine Forest. Ptolemy, in the second century AD first named it the Caledonian Forest – meaning “wooded heights” Today Glen Affric is a nature reserve and a wonderful place to visit, with regular sightings of deer, osprey, red squirrel, heron, foxes, golden eagle and pine marten.
