Dunrobin Castle and Falconry Tour from Invergordon Cruise Ship Port – Itinerary
The Dunrobin Castle and Falconry Display Tour begins with a stop in the historic town of Tain. Our next visit is our main destination – Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, with daily falconry demonstrations. After Dunrobin we return south to visit the lovely town of Dornoch. It is popular with visitors because of its golfing history, and the 800 year old Cathedral. On our return to the ship we can either visit to Glenmorangie Distillery, or walk at the stunning Falls of Shin.
Tain
Tain is the oldest Royal Burgh in the country, with charters dating from 1066. It is an attractive old town which people like to visit due to its good services and impressive buildings. The place is full of stories about Vikings, kings, saintly miracles, pilgrimages and more. There is a wonderful collegiate church which is great to visit because of its atmospheric cemetery.
Dunrobin Castle
The Earls of Sutherland have called Dunrobin Castle home since earliest times – the ancient keep dating from the 1200’s. Much of the castle today is now a vast Jacobean Chateau (in Franco-Scots style) built in the 1800’s. Our visitors can enjoy around twenty of its wonderfully furnished rooms. Versailles is the blueprint upon which the gardens are modelled.
The Falconry
The Falconry allows photo-opportunities with Peregrine Falcon, Golden Eagle and European Eagle Owl. The resident Falconer puts on two shows a day. You will see the hunting styles of the owl, the hawk and the falcon and as a result, some stunning aerobatic displays.
Dornoch
Dornoch has warm honey-coloured houses and flower-filled gardens. It has links to Madonna and Carnegie, and being Creagan (in Rosamunde Pilcher’s Winter Solstice). The town has a long golfing history (since 1616). There are also many attractions, such as the 13th century cathedral and the Witches’ Stone.
Glenmorangie Distillery
Glenmorangie Distillery has been legally distilling whisky since 1843. It is clearly Scotland’s favourite because it is the biggest single malt whisky seller on the domestic market. You could take a tour and enjoy a dram. As a result you will learn about the secret recipe, the unique water source and the famed sixteen men of Tain.
Falls of Shin
Falls of Shin are a powerful torrent on the River Shin. As a result the viewing platform here is considered one of the best places to see Atlantic salmon (from May to October). They attempt to leap up the falls to get to their spawning grounds. The surrounding woodland has a number of lovely walks laid out by the Forestry Commission.
