Isle of Mull, Iona and Duart Castle Tour – Itinerary
The Isle of Mull, Iona and Duart Castle Tour is perfect if you enjoy a ferry ride in spectacular surroundings. It has no less than two such return crossings. You travel down Loch Ness, through Fort William and across the first ferry. A drive through the peninsula of Morvern follows, and then the ferry onto the Isle of Mull. You will visit ancient the beautiful island of Iona and Duart Castle before recrossing the sea and returning by an alternate route.
The Great Glen
We set off down the Great Glen alongside Loch Ness, Loch Oich, spectacular Loch Lochy and through Fort William. It is here that we reach the west coast and Loch Linnhe, a long arm running in from the Atlantic Ocean.
Fort William
Fort William is located on the west coast and is the second largest town in the Highlands. It is nowadays often called the outdoor capital of the UK because of all of the outdoor pursuits available in the district. Nestling at the foot of Nevis Range, highest mountain range in the country, rock and snow sports are both popular. The scenery and wildlife in the surrounding area are exceptional. The town itself is a hive of activity with many shops and pubs and the acclaimed West Highland Museum.
Corran Ferry
Corran Ferry is the first ferry crossing on our tour. We cross Corran Narrows towards the lighthouse at Ardgour. Clan Maclean held the clanlands here, in past times. Arriving on the western side of the salt-water inlet of Loch Linnhe, we make our way through Morvern towards Lochaline in order to catch the ferry for the Isle of Mull.
Fishnish Ferry
We take the Fishnish Ferry because it is the shortest crossing between the Isle of Mull and the mainland, (only about 15 minutes). It also offers excellent views of the beautiful Sound of Mull and the ruins of Ardtornish Castle. We usually arrive at Fishnish at 12.13pm, and drive immediately to Tobermory because it is the ideal location for lunch.
Isle of Mull – Tobermory
Tobermory is the pretty capital of the Isle of Mull. It has a great range of souvenir, crafts and gift shops and is well appointed with bars and restaurants. It is famous for all the colourful harbourfront houses, and also being the setting for the childrens’ TV series; Balamory. This is where we will overnight.
Iona
Day two – an early start to make the best of our time today, we travel past epic mountains down and across the south of Mull – Mother Nature was kind to Mull and the scenery will not disappoint. Take the passenger ferry to Iona. There is time to enjoy free time exploring the ancient abbey or strolling along the sandy beaches.
Duart Castle
Duart Castle is the clan seat of Clan Maclean. It dates from the 12th century and was restored by Sir Fitzroy Maclean in the early years of the 20th century. It has featured in the movies “When Eight Bells Toll” – 1971, and “Entrapment” – 1999. After spending most of the afternoon on the Isle of Mull, we begin our journey back, using the same ferries because of both timings and economy. We usually aim at arriving at Lochaline at 4.43pm.
Commando Memorial
After passing through Fort William we reach the Commando Memorial. Standing on a hilltop with stunning 360 degree views, the magnificent bronze monument commemorates the commandos. Those hardy troops used the harsh ground of these mountains and moors from 1942 until 1945 because they made for an ideal tough training area. With good weather there are also great views of Ben Nevis from here.
The Return
We then return along the Great Glen back to Inverness, taking, where time allows, some different scenic back roads.

£1180 for the tour. Ferry tickets are separate online purchases for you. The ferry tickets will be about £75 total for the party for the day. But this may vary slightly as a result of the number of people in your party.

The tour departs from your Inverness accommodation, or any transport hub, such as bus station, train station or airport. You tell us, and we’ll be there.
FAQ
Can each person in the party pay separately?
Driver/Guide licencing in Scotland will only allow us to take one payment per tour, so if people in a party wish to split the cost then they arrange that amongst themselves and make one tour payment to us.
Are entries to the various visitor attractions or ferry fares included?
We don’t include entry to the attractions – and that way we leave the day as flexible as possible for you. Ferry fares vary dependent upon your party size so we cannot include them in a single set price.
Will I need cash with me?
Most places will accept Visa or MasterCard and some will accept American Express. It is always prudent, though, to bring a little cash with you for unexpected eventualities. You will need GBP, not Euros or Dollars.
What will we be doing for lunch?
You are responsible for paying for your own food & drink during your tour. Lunch could be in a café, pub, restaurant or even a picnic at a beauty spot. Your guide can discuss and advise on options when you meet them.

Summary terms and conditions:-
- All tours are exclusive and the same price for between one and seven people. Your booking is considered confirmed once we send out your confirmation.
- While Inverness Tours shall do everything reasonably possible to provide your tour itinerary and/or services as planned, we reserve the right to alter itineraries, guide, transport or accommodation if circumstances require us to do so. If we have to cancel a tour you receive a full refund of the amount paid and that is the extent of our obligation.
- Our normal Cancellation Terms as outlined in the point below have been temporarily relaxed. The relaxation is in relation to any booking which requires to cancel due to COVID-19. Our COVID-19 cancellation terms are outlined here.
- If you wish to change any part of your confirmed booking you should inform us in writing as soon as possible. We will do our best to assist you, but cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet your request. If you cancel a booking up to 30 days in advance you receive a 75% refund of the total paid. Cancellations between 30 and 10 days before the tour receive a 50% refund. There is no refund if you cancel within 10 days of the tour or are not at the organised departure or pick-up point.
- We are happy for you to enjoy bottled water and hard candies while we travel. Other types of food and drink have proved previously to be quite hazardous (on Highland roads) both to yourselves and seat upholstery.
