Tain
We will call in at this, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland (1066) on our way. Here you will have a choice of time to wander around the shops, and/or the characterful Collegiate Church dating from the 1400’s. Alternatively there will be time to visit Glenmorangie Distillery.

John O Groats
John O Groats is the most northerly point on the UK public roads. Jan de Groot is the Dutchman who is reputed to have given his name to the village as a result of running a 15th century ferry to Orkney. His name derives from the small denomination (the groat) that served as the ferry toll. His seven sons proved troublesome and argumentative – and for a quiet life created an octagonal house, containing an octagonal table, and so no-one could be said to be at the head of the table. The site of this house was by the mound and flagpole on the site.

Balnakeil Beach
Balnakeil Beach, just west of Durness, is a spectacular sweep of wide white sand, backed by large dunes. It is sheltered and ideal for sea bathing. Sunsets can be spectacular along this coast and due to being west-facing Balnakeil sees some of the best of them.

Loch Maree
We think Loch Maree is one of the prettiest lakes in the country. One of the last fragments of the “Great Wood of Caledon” is found dressing the islands and shores of the lake. This was the original Caledonian Pine forest that once covered so much of Scotland. Two of Scotland’s best loved mountains – Slioch and Beinn Eighe – tower above the waters of the lake.
